This morning I picked the last flowers in my garden. These are pom pom dahlias (as I’m sure you can tell). I always dig them up in the fall, winter them over in the garage, and plant them again in the spring. I had around 30 tubers, all sorts of colours.

This spring, when I planted them, we put screening around them to keep the rabbits out. For some reason, the moment the shoots come up, the rabbits appear and nibble them off. Do the shoots give off an enticing scent? I don’t know, but once chewed off, it takes a while for new shoots to appear. The webbing worked pretty well, not too many nibbled off.

In fact, not too many shoots showed up at all. I now have about 4 active dahlia tubers that gave me flowers this summer. I’ll try to dig around, see if some of the tubers still have possibilities, but it doesn’t look promising. Don’t know what happened, the collapse of my dahlia hopes!
